15,000 cleft surgeries needed every year in Pakistan

Around 15,000 cleft lip and palate surgeries were needed in Pakistan each year, as around 10,000 children are born with cleft lip or palate.

KARACHI, (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News – September 22, 2022): About 15,000 cleft lip and palate operations were needed in Pakistan each year as around 10,000 children are born with cleft lip or cleft palate.

This was informed by the Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy during the launch of Dr. Ghulam Qadir Fayyaz’s book “Surgical Atlas of Cleft Palate and Palatal Fistulae” here, said the DUHS press release on Thursday.

DUHS Vince Chancellor mentioned that there is a hole in the palate, some people have both problems at the same time. The amount of work that has been done on palatal fistula surgery in Pakistan has not been done anywhere in the world. This is why the first book on palatal fistula surgery was published by the Pakistani surgeon.

“We are proud that the author is a Dow-trained surgeon,” he added.

Prominent philanthropist Haji Hanif Tayyab, Prof. Shaista Effendi, Prof. Shahab Afzal Baig, Dr. Tahir Sheikh, Dr. Mazhar Nizam, Dr. Fazal and Dr. Ashraf Ganatra also attended the ceremony.

Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy said Dr Ghulam Qadir Fayyaz chose a very difficult topic. It was no easy task for this book. Dr. Fayyaz had made a great contribution in the field of plastic surgery.

He said that the publication of this book also meant that Dr. Ghulam Qadir Fayyaz had more devotion and commitment to plastic surgery and cleft palate surgery and he was very instrumental in this as well.

The author of the book, Dr Ghulam Qadir Fayyaz, said that in Pakistan, some children with cleft lip or palate died within the first year of birth due to complications.

Because their parents couldn’t reach the right treatment center due to neglect. The book had 109 chapters and it was the most effective and comprehensive book on cleft palate. It was the first book in the world on palatal fistulas, it also said that more than 43,000 surgeries have been performed in Pakistan and abroad and now they are determined to perform 15,000 surgeries per year in Pakistan so that no child dies from the complications of birth defects mentioned above.

The eminent philosopher Haji Hanif Tayyab claimed that the writer chose the field of plastic surgery at his insistence during a meeting with him in 1980.

Professor Shaista Effendi said that the writer has been performing surgeries very well for twenty-one years. Dr. Mazhar Nizam said that Dr. Ghulam Qadir Fayyaz has achieved great success in plastic surgery.
