Insurgents eliminated by carrying out a surgical strike in Myanmar, also associated with the Balakot airstrike

9 months after the death of General Bipin Rawat, the country has a new CDS. The government has appointed retired Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan as Chief of the Defense Staff (CDS). Lt. Gen. Chauhan, 61, retired from the military in May 2021 as head of Eastern Command. He has 40 years of military service experience.

In the explainer, we will explain why General Anil Chauhan is the best for the CDS and what are the big challenges ahead…

1. Experience of 4 decades: Posted from Kashmir to Nagaland

Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan was born on May 18, 1961. In 1981, he joined the army’s 11 Gorkha Rifles. He is an alumnus of National Defense Academy i.e. NDA Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy Dehradun. He was the Eastern Command Chief until his retirement in May 2021.

As a major general, he commanded an infantry division in the Baramulla sector of Jammu and Kashmir in the Northern Command. Later as a lieutenant general, he commanded the Northeast Corps and then became a general officer.

He became the Eastern Command Chief in September 2019 and remained in that position until his retirement. Eastern Command handles LAC affairs with China. He was the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) during the Balakot strike in 2019. He also served in the Angola Mission of the United Nations, i.e. the UN.

For his distinguished and distinguished service in the military, he was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.

2. Counter Terrorism Operations Specialist: Entering Myanmar and Conducting a Surgical Strike

Lt Gen Chauhan has a long experience in counter-terrorist operations. While commanding an infantry division in Baramulla, he led several successful counter-terrorism operations. Along with this, during his stay in the Northeast, he had also fought the insurrection.

Lieutenant General Chauhan was also the mastermind behind the Indian and Burma Army’s Operation Sunrise. In May 2019, the Indian army entered inside Myanmar’s border and eliminated the militants. This operation lasted three weeks.

During this operation, about 6 dozen activists from extremist organizations like Kamtapur Liberation Organization (KLO), NSCN Khaplang, United Liberation Front of Assam (I) and National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) were arrested. Apart from this, the camps of the militant organizations were also demolished.

3. Sugar Expert: Didn’t let the conflict escalate in Galwan

Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan has also been part of the army’s Eastern Command for a long time. For this reason, he is also considered an expert on Chinese affairs. Chauhan was the commander during the Galwan conflict with China in 2020 and was responsible for ensuring the security of these areas.

In December 2020 he said: “There is a long border between India and China. It is not correct to consider the dispute over part of the border as being related to the whole border. I would like to say that since the conflict in Ladakh, there has not been another major incursion or confrontation in the eastern command areas.

Defense expert PK Sehgal says- Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan also commanded a corps in the northeast. Later, he also became an army commander. They know a lot about the Northeast.

The greatest threat to India is near the Chicken Neck region of Siliguri. It is available in 33 cores. The other is Arunachal Pradesh. How to deal with China? Do we have infrastructure flaws? Do we have modernization needs? What kind of weapons do we need? What kind of modern systems do we need?

He has a good knowledge of all these things. His experience can therefore be of great use in resolving tensions between India and China.

4. Military Strategist: After retirement, continued to provide military advice to the government

Even after his retirement, Lt. Gen. Chauhan continued to serve the country as a military adviser to the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) headed by NSA Ajit Doval. The NSCS is considered the apex body of the national security architecture, which provides coordination between government and ministries on national security matters.

PK Sehgal says China is far ahead of us in technology right now. They are also ahead of us in terms of the number and capacity of weapons. These shortcomings must be corrected as soon as possible. Lieutenant-General Chauhan will be the sole adviser to the Minister of Defence. In such a situation, his expertise in China affairs will come in handy.

China’s biggest challenge before Lt. Gen. Chauhan

The biggest challenge before Lieutenant General Chauhan will be how he solves the problem called China. Tension has remained on the LAC since the Galwan conflict in 2020. India faces a stupid and dangerous neighbor. At the same time, the Pakistani standoff will also have to be dealt with.
