Operation Smile-WIM to organize a free surgical program

Operation Smile-Women in Medicine (WIM) will begin on Monday, October 10, 2022, its free surgical program for approximately 100 children with birth defects at Cebu City Medical Center.

Operation Smile, which was founded in Cebu, has been carrying out surgeries since 1998 with support from the Cebu Provincial Government, Cebu City Government and the Mariquita Salimbangon Yeung Charitable Foundation.

It has been able to help over 5,000 children living with a cleft lip or palate since its inception 24 years ago.

This year, the surgical program will be facilitated by women belonging to the WIM. They will also participate in the education forum, which will be held before the surgeries. The forum advocates for the empowerment of women.

“Operation Smile is mounting this new medical and educational mission as part of our new ‘Women in Medicine’ initiative to inspire more women to pursue medical careers and take on leadership roles to help address global shortages,” said the president and co-president of Operation Smile. -founder Kathleen Magee.

The WIM medical mission will run until October 15.

Approximately 60 volunteers, including plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, dentists, speech therapists, child life specialists and biomedical technicians from the United States, Vietnam, Australia, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Honduras, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Egypt and South Africa, and the Philippines, join the program.
