Ranchi: Devkamal Hospital will offer free cleft surgery from September 24-27


Ranchi, September 20: Devkamal Hospital and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), as part of its CSR initiative, will be offering free cleft lip and palate surgeries as part of Mission Smile from September 24-27.

“This is our first full surgical mission in Ranchi and our second in Jharkhand. So far, more than 150 patients have been operated on in Jharkhand through our surgical mission and outreach center in Jamshedpur,” the press release reads.

The hospital expects about 80 to 100 patients to be screened on September 24, followed by surgeries between September 25 and 27.

“It is anticipated that the comprehensive four-day cleft surgery camp will provide over 50 cleft surgeries by a team of medical experts in the field of plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, anesthesiology, pediatrics, dentistry, speech pathology and nursing across the country,” the press release read.

Dr. Anant Sinha, director of Devkamal Hospital, said doctors, nurses and Para Medical staff will help with the cleft surgery. All basic facilities including operating room, recovery room, post-operation room in the hospital will be provided for patients coming for treatment. He said that out of 700 children in the country, one child is born with a cleft. Out of 500 newborn babies in Jharkhand, at least one has a cleft problem.

Additionally, Rafi from Mission Smile said that since 2003 their organization has been contributing to cleft surgery. So far, 65,000 children have been successfully operated on across the country. Of these, in northeast India, about 22,000 children were operated on, which is the most. A surgery costs Rs 80,000 to Rs one lakh. Not only Indian but also foreign doctors will assist in the surgery.
