The Rural Surgery Advisory Council was established in 2012 and consists of representatives from the Board of Governors, the Advisory Committee of the General Surgery Advisory Council on Rural Surgery, Regents and Members-at-Large. The Rural Surgery Advisory Council is a committee of the Board of Regents.

The mission of the Advisory Council for Rural Surgery is to identify, investigate and correct challenges in rural surgical practice. The development of broad rural residency training streams as well as support for rural surgeons, including recruitment, retention, mentoring and post-residency training, are inherent in its efforts to ensure quality surgical care for rural patients. . All of the board’s efforts reflect ACS’s commitment to ensuring quality surgical care for potentially 60 million rural patients.
